Bottom Line | | | New RPGs VS Old RPGs | | | Who Wins?
To answer this simply; neither is better than the other. Similarly to any other game genre that has survived more than a few years, let alone a decade, the RPG genre has changed with gaming culture for better or worse. For the most part, every mechanic we cherish from old games which has been removed has been replaced with another. The sacrifice of confined spaces flooded with interaction was sacrificed for large open worlds with stunning visuals. While it may be a bad trade to some, most are fine with it and looking for more.
The years to come are only going to mean even greater changes to game genres. Even in the age of copy-paste AAA titles, each includes at least one minor mechanical change. Ultimately, for gamers who are still holding on tight to their copy of “Morrowind,” wishing that the next game would “go back to their roots,” you are sadly misplacing your hope. Each year games are appealing to an even more widespread audience which is only going to keep thinning that once hard-line which defined the RPG genre.
