Over the last decade, the “old-school” role-playing genre has seen some major changes. Gone are the days of meticulous stat point allocation, the need to read pages of dialogue to find your objective, and head-scratching world layouts. Long-term role-playing gamers have watched as RPGs have gone from being played on the table with stacks of paper with “Dungeons and Dragons” to offering full worlds with beautiful aesthetics and over 111,000 lines of recorded dialogue in “Fallout 4 (2015).” One of the greatest debates which gamers can’t seem to agree on is figuring out whether the changes that happened between these two types of games are for better or worse.
