  • Locked Roles

Whether referring to “World of Warcraft (2004)” or Dungeons and Dragons, classes and roles meant everything to the traditional RPG. You pick your class and right away you’ve got your specific skill trees and class-locked equipment. Developers knew that if you picked a light armored class you expected to start with rags and end the game with fancy embroidered rags.

  • Release the Roles!

One of the recent major changes to this formula is found in games like “The Secret World (2012)” and The Elder Scrolls series which collapse this wall and encourage players to engage in the style which they want to be. No longer is a heavily armored healer who dual-wields axes just a dream but to hardcore RPG fans plenty still see this freedom as an annoying gimmick that upsets the balance of roles in games.
